International Conference on “Civilizations of Central Asia: Sedentary and Nomadic Peoples. Traditions and the Present”

The conference was organized in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences, French Institute of Central Asian Studies (IFEAK) and with the financial assistance of UNESCO and the Institute of Open Society - Soros Foundation (Uzbekistan), on 25-28 September 2002, in Samarkand.

Over 85 scholars from 15 countries attended the conference: USA-2; Belgium-3; Germany-2; India-1; Iran-2; Italy -7; Kazakhstan (Almaty and Chimkent)-5; China-1; Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek and Osh)-4, Poland-2; Russia (Moscow, St. Peterburg, Kemerovo)-4; Tadjikistan-3; Turkey-1; France-4; and over 45 participants from Uzbekistan.

Altogether 61 reports have been presented and certain problems of interaction between nomadic and sedentary civilizations were discussed. Chronologically the reports were focused on the period from the Stone Age to the present.

At the end of the conference two discussions of the IICAS projects and a round table also took place.

The first discussion focused on “Central Asian Caravanserais” which was run by the UNESCO coordinator of caravansaries M. Pierre Lebigre and E.Tomopolous from EVCAU.

The second discussion focused on the projects on “Petroglyphs in Central Asia”.

The round table discussion was held on 28 September after the conference and discussions were ended and touched upon specific issues raised by some participants, wrapped up the discussions and brought about few recommendations to the IICAS as coordinating centre.
