International seminar Petroglyphs of Central Asia

International seminar Petroglyphs of Central Asia was organized at the Issyk-Kul lake by the Institute of History of the Kyrgyz National Academy of Sciences, in the framework of UNESCO, IICAS, and CNRS-Paris joint research programme (UNESCO, IICAS and CNRS-Paris) on Petroglyphs of Central Asia.

Scholars and specialists in ancient fine art from Azerbaijan, France, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, the USA, and Uzbekistan took part in the seminar.

Seventeen reports on topical problems related to the research of rock art in region and contiguous territories were delivered. The methods of documenting petroglyphs sites, the development and employment of modern technologies of recording and preservation of the graphic materials themselves and information about the condition of petroglyphs in their historical context were in the focus of attention.

The discussion of issues concerning the preservation of the material cultural heritage appeared an important part of the work of the seminar. A serious concern was voiced in connection with an intensive destruction of rock art monuments under the influence of present-day human and other damaging factors. These problems were touched upon in a number of reports devoted to the preservation of rock art monuments and turning them into museums.

The discussion defined the necessity of creation of the standard documentation of monuments of rock art and computer database of sites.
