Republican Conference Achievements and Prospects of Research, Preservation and Management of Natural and Cultural Heritage “Sarmishsay”
April 17-19, 2008, Navoi

The Republican scientific conference to study and preserve monuments of cultural heritage “Sarmishsay” was held on April 17-19, 2008 in the city of Navoi, Uzbekistan.

The conference was arranged by common efforts of the UNESCO Tashkent Office, Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, Administration of Navoi region, Navoi Mining and Smelting Enterprise (NMSE) and International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS).

Attending the conference were archaeologists, conservators, ethnographers, historians, biologists, zoologists, geologists, as well as international experts on cultural heritage from Norway and Japan.

The conference was held within the framework of three thematic sections to cover 25 reports and papers. Conference reports touched upon major problems arising from research, preservation and management of natural-landscape and archaeological-cultural complex “Sarmishsay”. Participants of the conference were informed that in February 2008 the archaeological and natural landscape “Sarmishsay” was put on the UNESCO Preliminary List of World Heritage under Paragraphs 3 and 6.
