International Conference "Preservation of the traditional classical music "Shashmakom"

This international conference was held within the framework of the 5th International Music Festival "Shark taronalari" (August 27-29, 2005).

Shashmakom is profound national classical music of Central Asia, that appeared in the pre-Islamic period, although its intensive development took place in later time, up to the present.

Makoms or makams are a part of the culture of different nations from the Northern Africa to China and thus constitute the basis for several music schools.

In November 2003 considering the value and cultural specificity as well as a risk of extinction, UNESCO proclaimed shashmakom, the classical music of Central Asia (Uzbekistan and Tajikistan), a masterpiece of oral and spiritual heritage of mankind.

In 1987 a study group "Makam" was established, its coordinators being Prof Jurgen Elsner ( Germany ) and Prof. Faizulla Karomatly (Uzbekistan). The group had five conferences which took place in Helsinki (1997), Turkey (1998), Berlin (1989 and 1992), Samarkand and Bukhara (2001).

The sixth conference dedicated to shashmakom was organized in Samarkand , on 27-29 August 2005. Well-known music scholars and researchers from Azerbaijan, the UK, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, France and other countries took part in the work of the conference.

The conference finished with a roundtable discussion on “The prospects of studies, preservation and the development of the traditions of Shashmakom” and a round-up conclusion.
